2008 Under Soapbox Mama This morning I laid flat on the floor with my two kids trying to wake up. It was early and my brain had not cleared the fogginess of sleep. Both of them had been up for awhile and like all children, their exuberance had kicked in the moment…

I recently read an article about a 10 year old boy who is a bull fighting prodigy. He is from Mexico and is currently traveling in France partaking in non-professional demonstrations in bullfighting schools. In France, the approved age for bull fighters is sixteen. Due to the age gap, the boy’s involvement has resulted in a canceled appearance and has sparked massive debate about the dangers he faces in the ring.

Last year, five of my friends, including myself, were all pregnant. It was the first baby for all of them, but I was on my second. The days of their disinterest as I rambled on about the greatest children’s products were now ignited by their own fervour and zest for the latest baby merchandise. I had to smirk as they discussed which video monitor was essential or how the trendy fifteen hundred dollar stroller was about to go on sale. All too often I was read reviews, taken to stores, shown a new…

This weekend I attended a beautiful Greek wedding. It was a very ceremonial event lasting over an hour and filled with tradition and symbolism. At one point in the ceremony, the priest spoke about the roles of both the husband and wife. As he read from his scriptures he talked…

About a month ago my mother came to visit me. She lives in a relatively small town, so her trips to the city consist of us doing a lot of shopping. Recently, her favorite foundation had run out so we happily made our way down to the expensive department store for a new jar.…

This summer our aging next door neighbors had their two grand daughters come and stay for over two months. The oldest girl was the same age as my son, so by the end of their first day, a new friendship was quickly budding. As with most people who live in populated neighborhoods, most activities that occurred in our yard, they’re privy to them. If we were barbecuing, running through the sprinkler, eating watermelon on the deck or just picking weeds, the girl next door was quickly asking if she co…

After my first child, a handful of people asked me if I was feeling any Baby Blues. Thankfully, I was able to escape the hormonal imbalance that often affects new moms and merrily went about my new role of mother with zest and vigor. I quickly immersed myself into all things baby. As my son grew, my world consisted of classes, play dates and, of course, daily trips to the playground. My mornings were about pancakes shaped like dinosaurs, my vehicle only played Old MacDonald, nighttime had me rea…

Recently my son’s little four-year-old girl friend arrived at our house wearing a very hip and stylish Hannah Montana ensemble. I, of course, have a boy, and have not been privy to the Hannah craze. I was surprised that this little tyke was completely informed and up to speed…

Studying costumes and costume design was one of my favorite things in school. For whatever reason, I loved the ornate and overly detailed fabrics of the years gone by. I was particularly enthralled with the 17th century, the French court and all that was Renaissance.

I ad…

The recent warm weather and burst of spring showers had prompted my son into a desire for puddle jumping. Of course, the rubber boots he donned last year were far from fitting onto his now three-year-old toes, so off to the store we went to get a new pair.

Not thinking and trying to mult…

After working in the wardrobe department in the film industry for over twelve years, I know a thing or two about fashion. One of my many jobs involved the demanding and hectic process of buying the perfect outfit for the top celebrities.
When I say perfect, I mean perfect—that authentic red 1950s dress that the director had his heart set on seeing, or that simple white t-shirt that’s actually far from simple!

Dear all,
Sorry that I've been away for a while. Things have been busy for both of us recently, but I've managed to upload some photos taken of Alison Jaydina when she was 1-1/2 months old.
How time flies...She's going to be 4 months old soon. Gonna be a big girl :) Alison's healthy and well and it's great to see her being so responsive pertaining to her gestures, laughs, body language etc. She's learning to flip over to her side now...so it will be success anytime soon :)
Some of Alison's ch…

I'm currently doing both breast & bottle feeding as my breastmilk supply is still low. Are there guidelines as to when one should increase the quantity of a formula feed?
Per guidelines & instructions, i'm feeding my child 60ml from the bottle. If its deemed insufficient for her, I'll feed her regularly based on the 60ml guideline.
When should i increase it to 70ml or 80ml? are there guidelines as to how much milk a child should consume based on their growth rate?
Cheers. Linda

Alison Jaydina is now nine days old :)
I've registered her birth yesterday, and receiving her birth certificate brought a smile to my face. Funny how little things like these can bring a smile to my face.
Looking at her every gesture during these nine days is amazing - even if she does eat & sleep most of the time. Every movement, every gesture of how she wants her feed, rejects her feed, the way she smiles whilst dozing away to dreamland :)
Those are the nice moments, although the incess…

Hi All,
I've just delivered my baby on 20 March, but till now I dont have any milk inside my breasts.
I've tried massaging my breasts, the baby has suckled on my breasts, using warm pads, even using the breast pump to assist in milkflow - but there's still no milk coming out from my ducts.
Not even colostrum.
Am I just dry? Is there such a thing?
Regards, Linda
